The President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, 69, has contracted COVID-19 and isolating himself.
The statement came from the President’s Office
He has reportedly temporarily handed over power to Vice President David Mabuze.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa, is receiving treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms after a positive test for a viral infection on Sunday, “the president’s office said in a statement on Twitter.
It is noted that the President felt unwell after attending the event in Cape Town. He is now in good spirits and under the supervision of military medical specialists of the South African Defense Forces.
“The fully vaccinated president has isolated himself in Cape Town and handed over all authority to Vice President David Mabuze for next week (this week-ed.),” The statement said.
Ramaphosa, who previously returned from a West African tour, has passed the COVID-19 test several times. The test results of the members of the accompanying delegation were negative.
The President called on the country’s residents to be vaccinated and to be vigilant.
