President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has today met with President of the European Council Charles Michel and Prime Minister of Armenia Nicole Pashkinyan in Brussels.
A number of important issues were discussed at the meeting, which was held in a constructive atmosphere, the report said. The issue of demining of the liberated territories of Azerbaijan was on the agenda at the meeting, and it was noted that the European Union is ready to provide technical assistance to Azerbaijan in this direction.
The President of the EU Council called for the elimination of the legacy of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This means that, as Azerbaijan says, the conflict is a thing of the past and we need to look to the future. Ş. In her statement, Michel called for the fulfillment of the obligations arising from the meetings and statements of November 10, 2020, January 11, 2021 and November 26, 20 (Sochi), which coincides with the position of Azerbaijan.
Another important point in the statement is that for the first time, the issue of missing persons has been included in the EU agenda and the need to clarify their fate has been highlighted. This is very important, because the fate of more than 4,000 people missing by Azerbaijan during the First Karabakh War is still unknown.
The statement expressed support for humanitarian demining efforts. This means that the EU will support Azerbaijan’s demining efforts. Support is expressed to people affected by the conflict, especially in rehabilitation and reconstruction activities. This is a very positive point, as it means that the EU will support the rehabilitation and reconstruction work carried out by Azerbaijan in the liberated territories.
The EU also expressed support for the demarcation and delimitation of borders as a consultant. The statement also expressed the EU’s support for the development of economic cooperation in the South Caucasus region and proposed the establishment of a joint economic cooperation platform.
Charles Michel expressed the EU’s support for the creation of communication infrastructure in the region, the opening and development of lines that ensure reconciliation between countries. He even said that the EU will support these projects through economic and investment resources. All this shows that Azerbaijan’s rightful position was confirmed at the meeting organized by the EU.
