“It is difficult to say, because we need to see the outcome of today’s meeting. But we appreciate the work of the European Commission and personally the President of the Council of the European Union, Mr. Charles Michel. He contributes to the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Michel’s visit to the region this summer has been very productive. “
The statement came from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais in Brussels on December 14, Report reports.
The head of state noted that, by the way, his initiative to establish direct contacts between the defense ministers of the two countries is also working. So now this communication channel is already effective. This clearly shows that the European Commission is willing and ready to create conditions for a stable environment in the South Caucasus and to create a tripartite format of interaction between the three South Caucasus countries in the future. Azerbaijan’s position is completely open and clear. We want peace, we do not want war. We have won the war, we have won, and this reality must be taken into account. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been resolved. There is no return to any discussions on the so-called status of Nagorno-Karabakh. We solved it ourselves, by force and political means. We have done this unilaterally 27 years after the adoption of UN Security Council resolutions, and this is a new reality that must be taken into account, first of all, by Armenia. Because, as we have seen from the post-war situation, the major international players have already accepted the new reality and are trying to build their future based on this new reality. Armenia must refrain from any acts of hostility against Azerbaijan and territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Because I have said several times that we have very historical reasons for our territorial claims against Armenia. They must work on a peace agreement and adhere to normal behavior in the 21st century. In any case, we are neighbors, none of us will move to another planet. Therefore, we must learn to live side by side, gradually laying the foundation for the normalization of relations, including contacts between peoples. We have openly stated that we are ready for it. However, we have not yet received any positive signals from Armenia. It seems to me that the internal situation in Armenia and, as I said earlier, after the defeat in the war, there was a kind of psychological trauma in their society due to frustration and, to put it mildly, dissatisfaction, exaggerated expectations, unrealistic assessment of military and political potential. Therefore, it is important that the Armenian government does not stand behind public opinion based on inciting hatred against Azerbaijanis and takes the lead in the process of normalization. Public opinion must be formed. “
“The only way for Armenia’s development is to normalize relations with Azerbaijan, to normalize relations with Turkey, to take important steps to convince people to be neighbors, not neighbors, but neighbors and to avoid territorial claims. “If we do, we have a chance to move forward. As for us, our position is clear. I have said this many times and I repeat that we want peace, stability, security and a prosperous future for the South Caucasus.” stressed.
