The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized addiction to computer games as a disease.
The statement came from WHO expert on psychoactive substances and addictive behaviors Vladimir Poznyak, RIA Novosti reported.
Gambling addiction is now included in the 11th update of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases. This is known as a type of mental disorder.
“Diagnosis of addiction to computer games can be made only by trained medical professionals. Therefore, the diagnostic description of a gambling disorder should not be applied to relatives or friends. This is the exclusive right of doctors,” he said.
The agency’s interviewee noted that during the holidays, most people spend more time at the computer, including playing video games. However, it cannot be said that the increase in gaming activity is a sign of the disease. These conclusions can be drawn by experts.
The patient should show signs of play disorders throughout the year that negatively affect many areas of his life, including his family and professional life.
However, representatives of the computer industry are opposed to the inclusion of gambling addiction in the list of diseases. They believe that games have “educational and therapeutic” functions.
