The World Health Organization (WHO) says the number of people infected with the coronavirus in the world has exceeded 290 million, and the number of deaths has exceeded 5.44 million.

The WHO has received 290,959,532 infections and 5,446,753 deaths. In total, the number of infected people increased by 1,276,532, and the number of deaths increased by 4,632.
Over the past week, more than a million infections have been reported six times a day. The anti-record for the entire period of the pandemic (since the spring of 2020) was recorded on January 1, 2022. On that day, 1,859,485 cases of infection were registered. WHO statistics only take into account officially confirmed data on infections and deaths provided by states.
The publication notes that the highest number of coronavirus infections reported to the WHO was in the United States. A total of 54,910,550 infections have been reported in the United States.
The coronavirus began to spread in December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The World Health Organization named the infection COVID-19 on February 11, 2020, and on March 11 declared the coronavirus a pandemic.
